ot
since the Beattles has a band had as much impact as Nirvana did in the
early 90s music scence. When their first major label album, Nevermind,
was released in September of 1991, it marked an end to the 'hair bands'
that had saturated the music mainstream and brought forth a new movement
less concerned about image and more concerned about the music itself.
Kurt Cobain (guitar, vocals), Krist Novoselic (bass)
and Dave Grohl (drums) quickly became household names after their smash
hit 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' hit the airwaves as its first single. MTV
helped fuel the new 'grunge' movement by constantly playing the 'Teen
Spirit' video and quickly disposing of bands like Poison.
Nevermind went on to sell over 10 million
copies and produced such Nirvana classics as 'Come As You Are', 'Lithium',
'In Bloom', and one of my personal favorites, 'Lounge Act.' It seemed
like Nirvana was on top of the world and could not do anything wrong,
but the truth was that Kurt Cobain had become a junkie, his worst fear.
The deadly grip of heroin had taken hold of the frontman and he quickly
took refuge in the extremely addictive narcotic.
Despite his heavy dependence on heorin, Kurt managed
to write 1993's Nevermind follow-up, In Utero. The opening
line of the first song reflected a Kurt that was sick and tired of being
'knighted' as the 'voice of a generation' and spokesmen for teenage angst:
"Teenage angst has paid off well, now I am bored and old." In
Utero combined Kurt's edgy and spacy lyric style with a more abrasive
and experimental sounds, less 'pop' and more 'punk.' The album was a success
because of songs like 'Rape Me', 'Heart-Shaped Box', 'Dumb', and 'Radio
Friendly Unit Shifter'.
Kurt's
life came to a tragic end in April of 1994 when he committed suicide in
his Seattle home after purchasing a shotgun and shooting up an almost
lethal dose of heroin into his veins and pulling the trigger. Unable to
cope with his success and unable to escape from the rigors of fronting
a band as huge as Nirvana, he succumbed to an untimely death that shattered
the hearts of many fans and left alone a daughter and wife. But instead
of lamenting at the unfortunate end of the life of a man adored by many,
we must cherish the gift he left us --- his music.
